Proposal prepared by Levin Brown.  Levin is the founder of Great Mountain Rafting.  www.raftchina.com

Levin writes:

Friends of New River Academy and rivers worldwide-

Southwest China, including the area north of Lijiang near the Great Bend of the Yangtze has experienced heavy rains in recent weeks.  Some roads needed for key logistical movements may present problems for our larger trucks. Great Mountain is coordinating with local contacts to ensure the planned trip timeline can remain the same.  If there are any changes that must be made to ensure we have enough time to do everything, we will notify you and New River Academy immediately.  Safety and reliable logistics are very important to us; we want you to know what to expect and have a great time in this amazing part of the world.  Our survey of the roads will be complete soon, and we will let you know the plan thereafter.

Thank you-

Shanghai Arrival

Our trip begins with your arrival in Shanghai, where we’ll gather the group together and fly immediately to Lijiang.  After getting to bed, you’ll probably be up early by local time as you won’t have yet adjusted.  This is a great opportunity to explore the world famous city’s winding cobblestone streets and quiet streams before anyone else shows up.  We’ll spend the day picking up some last minute items and visiting the many scenic areas, and spend the night to ensure everyone catches up on their sleep.

Culture, the Yangtze, and Your Children

The next morning the adventure begins.  We’ll hop a bus to the ancient stone city of Baoshan, a tiny Naxi minority village with 800 year-old homes carved out of the local red rock. After a short visit, we’ll head down to the river, and set out the next morning with the rest of the NRA group.  We’ll be on the river for 5-6 days as we float the eastern Great Bend of the Yangtze.  We’ll stop in villages and try local foods, and take short hikes to breathe in the spectacular surroundings.  Terraced rice paddies, ancient homes, and minority traditions that have been sheltered by the towering mountains for centuries avail themselves only to those outsiders who come down the river.  We’ll get to enjoy it all as we float the many rapids that will challenge us through the Yangtze gorge.

A Change of Pace

Our takeout will lead us back to Lijiang, and the group will get the chance to mingle for a day, whereupon we’ll head back to Shanghai for a definite change of pace.  You’ll be stunned as you see what China has become in just a few hours flight as the center of China’s galloping economy sprawls out into the Yangtze river delta, where the water we just rafted will soon flow past into the Pacific.  Myriad cultural and shopping options will provide more than enough to do in your remaining time; stay as long as you like, as there endless urban adventures to be had as well!

Trip notes
Many of you have asked for specifics regarding this trip. I have heavily pressured Levin to produce a "tentative itin." Levin has juggled a way to place the parents and the students together.
His unknown is a washed out road described in the above logistics. It is my understanding that Levin will return to China next month. He has made it clear that this itinerary may change due to the unknown.
Please email or write your thoughts, what would you like to do most...
Dates and costs are being requested and will be presented to families as soon as received.
Thank you Levin for dedicating so much attention to these trips.
